About

Welcome to the Mahatma Gandhi College of Social Work! is an unique institution rooted in Gandhian values and committed to empowering communities through innovative, hybrid education. Established in 2010 at the historic Bhitiharwa Gandhi Ashram in Bihar.

An initiative of the Non-Violence Foundation, Mahatma Gandhi College of Social Work was envisioned in 2010 with the aim of empowering rural communities in Champaran, Bihar. Our unique hybrid model of education was designed to contribute towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals while promoting socio-economic development along the Indo-Nepal border. With the unwavering support of Edgar Gramiger, our International Director from Switzerland, and Dr. Birendra Kumar, the founder of the Non-Violence Peace Movement, we laid the foundation for this esteemed institution with the backing of Gujarat Vidyapeeth and the Gandhi Research Foundation.

Our Journey and Challenges

Despite our commitment to community development, initiating the college in Champaran faced significant technical challenges. At that time, the University Grants Commission (UGC) had no clear guidelines for social work education, and universities in Bihar were not aware of the Master of Social Work (MSW) program, making affiliation difficult. However, with the introduction of the New Education Policy (NEP) and the growing recognition of hybrid and online learning models, higher education in India has undergone a revolutionary transformation. The UGC’s upgraded policies on distance and online learning, coupled with the government’s mandate to integrate hybrid education, have created the perfect opportunity for us to fulfill our vision.
