Years of history and education

Mahatma Gandhi College of Social Work was established in 2010 by Dr. Birendra Kumar, Edgar Gramiger, and Dr. Marek Wosinski, with a vision to integrate Gandhian social work principles into modern education. The initiative was strongly supported by Padma Shri Bhavarlal Jain and many renowned educationists as a community-driven college. The land and building for the college were generously provided by former Prime Minister Shri Chandrashekhar, who also suggested its name in 2007.

However, due to its non-traditional hybrid curriculum, lack of infrastructure, and non-cooperation from the state government, the college could not launch its programs as planned. Facing continuous challenges, we eventually left Bihar in 2018, particularly from Champaran, as no university was willing to affiliate a college dedicated to social work with a hybrid education model. Despite our efforts, our proposal for hybrid curriculum was repeatedly rejected until 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 brought recognition to the importance of hybrid learning.

With the UGC’s approval of hybrid education, our vision finally gained official support, and in 2022, we relaunched the college in Najafgarh, New Delhi, as a regular institution. Currently, we offer Diploma and PG Diploma programs in Social Work, following our unique curriculum model of 40% theoretical learning and 60% practical training. Our hybrid learning approach has now become a national trend, with the UGC actively promoting blended education across India.
